A useful past

Let the old room
speak.

Tideline Loft begins with the imagined shell of a small waterfront workshop: a generous roof volume, exposed trusses and a tall window facing the harbor. The concept keeps those qualities visible instead of dividing the space into a series of conventional rooms.

New elements sit within the existing shell. An oak kitchen defines one edge of the shared living area; a limewashed enclosure holds the more private functions. Leaving a clear gap below the roof makes it possible to read the older structure across the whole room.

Domestic scale

Furniture, joinery
and borrowed light.

The kitchen island and dining table organize daily life without relying on a corridor. Lower pieces of joinery preserve sightlines to the harbor window. Softer materials are concentrated where people sit, balancing the rough texture of brick and timber without covering it.

A restrained palette allows the difference between old and new to remain clear. Repair marks are part of the imagined character of the room. The proposal does not depend on making every surface uniform or disguising how the building might have changed over time.

The design question

A second life
for a working building.

The study considers how a large open shell can become a comfortable home through a few precise insertions. Actual reuse would require structural, fire, flood and change-of-use assessments, alongside investigation of the building’s condition. This portfolio concept demonstrates an approach to storytelling, not a completed conversion.
